A
jib crane is a type of
crane where a horizontal
member (jib
or boom), supporting
a moveable hoist, is
fixed to a wall or to a floor-mounted pillar.
(A
hoist is a device used for lifting or lowering a load by means of a
drum or
lift-wheel around which rope or chain wraps. It may be manually
operated,
electrically or pneumatically driven and may use chain, fiber or wire
rope as
its lifting medium. The load is attached to the hoist by means of a
lifting
hook.)
Jib
cranes are used in industrial
premises and on military vehicles.
The
term “Jib Crane” covers a design of cranes that has
a rotating boom attached to
a mast which is held in a vertical position by floor and ceiling
mounting or by
wall bracket mounting. However, the most widely used design is the
Self-Supported
type at the base.
These
cranes
relieve the overhead crane of much work and reduce waiting
time.
Jib
Cranes are of the following types:-
1.Floor Mounted Type:-
This
self-supported jib crane is designed for base plate
mounting on concrete foundation, and has 360°
rotation.

jib cranes
2. Wall mounted type (fixed):-
This jib crane is deigned for wall / RCC Column bracket
mounting and has 200° maximum
rotation. Covers the area nea the
bracket mounting without obstruction at floor level.

3. Wall mounted
type (travelling):-
Covers the lengthwise area near the building
columns without obstruction at floor level. It requires special design
for
columns. These cranes do not rotate but travels on runway
tracks
suspended along building / shed columns.
All
the three motions (hoisting, trolley travel and rotation) may be
hand-operated
or electrified or a combination such as electric hoist
with hand power rotation
and trolley travel. These type of cranes are widely found in
applications like fabrication shops, machine shops, assembly floors,
loading and unloading
purposes and can be both outdoor as well as indoor duty.
Lifting
Capacities of Floor mounted cranes are usually in the upto 5 MT (on special orders upto 15 MT), Standard Spans upto 20 feet (on
special orders upto 60 feet), Standard under boom height from 8 feet to
20 feet (on special orders upto 40 feet).
Lifting Capacities of Wall mounted cranes are usually in the
range of 0.25 MT to 5 MT, Reach upto
30 feet & Rotation upto 200 deg.
