Definitions & History

What is Consistency?

"Consistency" refers to the amount of water required to prepare hydraulic cement pastes for conducting tests for  determination of the initial and final setting times and for soundness test by Le Chatelier method. These tests require neat cement paste of standard consistency to be used.

As per ASTM C 187 Standard Test Method for Normal Consistency of Hydraulic Cement, Standard/normal consistency of a cement paste is defined as that consistency which will permit the Vicat plunger to penetrate to a depth of 10 ± 1 mm below the original surface in 30 sec (in some standards to a point 5 to 7 mm : like BS 4550 Part 3 which stipulates 5+-1mm with a 10mm dia plunger from the bottom of the Vicat mould when the cement paste is tested as per prescribed procedure)
