Why grinding is not done in lieu of
capping for preparation of cylindrical specimens for compression test
grinding
method?
Grinding
(by methods like silicon carbide abrasion) is a feasible alternative to
make the end surfaces of specimen plane & square. Further, the
ground
specimens have the same strength as those with cast test surfaces.
This
is a
major advantage of grinding method over capping method since strength
of cap
influences apparent strength of concrete.
However,
grinding
method is not commonly used since
it is much more expensive than capping
method
