Landscape Design:

A Landscape Design Diagram is much like a floor plan except that it is for an outdoor area. It maintains the actual dimensions of the area on a much smaller scale and normally includes any surrounding floral accents and natural aspects of the area while also incorporating lawn furniture, outbuildings, the type of ground covering used, or whatever else you choose to include.

Typical Uses of Landscape Design

It is best to use for a landscaping project or to plan the layout of an outdoor event. The design allows for a broad overview of the area and aids the decision, while considering special and financial restrictions as well, of what is to be done with the area.

Best Practices:

      • Identify a space: Decide on the area to be depicted in the diagram. This may be difficult due to the open nature of an outside area, but the Landscape Design should illustrate only the area that is subject to the landscaping or the location of the event. Be sure to draw everything to scale so that the diagram is accurate and well-planned.

      • Create the area: Begin by drawing borders of the area to indicate an end to the diagram. It might be the edge of a garden, the end of the yard, a fence, or any other area beyond which the landscape is no longer pertinent.

      • Add ground: Fill in the area with the appropriate type or types of groundcover (such as grass or asphalt) that is already in place or that will be added during the landscaping. It may be useful to apply textures for a more accurate depiction of the area.

      • Add permanent features: Add any rocks, waterways, buildings, poles, slopes, etc. that cannot or will not be moved during the landscaping process. Be sure to use the correct symbols and colors for these as well. In the end this aid in the imagination of the area when it is complete.

      • Add additional features: Now add any additional shrubbery, flowers, plants, walkways, stairs, lawn furniture, pools, pool houses, sheds, gazebos, buildings, fountains, artificial rocks, etc. that you plan on adding or that were already there.

      • Put to use and store: Use the diagram as a guide for the project. It may be useful to store the diagram for future reference.
