SDL diagrams are best used when a system
must be analyzed in great detail. They are meant to show every single step of a
process and aren't as useful when broad overview is desirable.
Best Practices:
Identify the process: Determine which
process is to be diagrammed using the SDL system.
Start the diagram: A rounded rectangle
represents the beginning of a SDL diagram, although there are many variations
that can mean different types of starts. Creating the diagram can be made quick
and easy using the SDL Diagram template offered by SmartDraw.
Add more nodes: To show a process, use a
rectangle. Triangles and hexagons represent decisions, polygons in the shape of
arrows symbolize messages, rectangles with a wavy bottom are documents, etc.
There are many different symbols that represent different steps of a process.
End the process: Use another rounded
rectangle to end the system.
Verify accuracy: Consult with other members
of your team or company to confirm that all of your details are accurate.
